Assessment of learning outcomes in A syllabus of English in spring 2021 is the second part of a longitudinal study. In autumn 2018 learning outcomes of English were evaluated at the beginning of grade 7. Same pupils are now re-assessed at the final phase of basic education, i.e. at the end of grade 9.
The purpose of the evaluation is to obtain reliable, national information on the achievement of the objectives set in the National core curriculum for basic education (EDUFI 2014).
The focus of the assessment is on pupils’ language proficiency in content areas described in the National core curriculum for basic education 2014. Content areas in question are interaction skills, text interpretation skills and text production skills. The relationship between pupils’ background factors and language proficiency is also investigated.
The evaluation was carried out digitally, using a laptop or a desktop computer. According to the National core curriculum, language teaching should also promote the development of pupils’ multiliteracy (EDUFI 2014, 219). Information and communication technology provide a natural opportunity for implementing language assessment in authentic situations (EDUFI 2014, 221).
