Social Inclusion Research Project
The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre is taking part to the broader research project, “Social Inclusion”. The research project will document the experiences of marginalization and bias of fifth graders and their teachers. The research project aims to understand the extent, causes, and consequences of bullying and marginalization. The broader research project also evaluates the effectiveness of workshops on stereotypes and bias organized by Walter ry, which are offered in some of the participating schools. The research will be conducted by researchers at Aalto University and Harvard University.
The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre will implement the survey-research for fifth graders and their teachers. The survey will be administered in partnership with the Research Institute for Learning Analytics at the University of Turku. The first wave of the Social Inclusion research project’s survey for 5th graders was organized in the fall of 2021. Since then the surveys was modified to reflect feedback and the same fifth graders and teachers participated in the survey again in the spring of 2022. The second survey was conducted in the school year 2022-2023. The next survey will be conducted in the school years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 for 5th grade students and their teachers.
Data gathered through the survey will be complemented by survey data gathered by teachers and registry data using the Finnish National Agency for Education’s KOSKI database, the application registry, as well as register data available from Statistics Finland. The register data will be used, among other things, in long-term follow-up research.
All data collected as part of the research will be handled responsibly and risks relating to data-privacy will be minimized. It will be impossible to identify any individuals or schools based on the results in the study.
The responsible leader of the research is Matti Sarvimäki, a professor at Aalto University, and the project officer is the senior evaluation advisor Niina Nurkka at the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre.
